In response to a recent “conversation” in the New York Times, Responsum Founder Andy Rosenberg offered the following thoughts on the need for better tools so that patients can maximize the value of the Internet, while avoiding its many pitfalls.
I think this is a very important conversation and highlights a critical challenge facing every patient with a life changing diagnosis: How to reconcile the promise of virtually unlimited access to knowledge on the Internet, when as a practical matter, the information that is available is usually overwhelming, inaccurate and unhelpful. What patients and their loved ones need is a professionally curated, reliable stream of personalized information culled from the web.
As a result of my first-hand experience while trying to navigate the healthcare system – and the Internet – for my ill mother, I committed to creating a personalized newsfeed of reliable, summarized content for patients with chronic diseases. We are currently developing our technology, which uses a combination of machine learning and complex algorithms to match the right content with the right patient at the right time.
Built upon a year’s worth of patient interviews, our startup seeks to provide the ultimate patient tool for gathering personally relevant information and organizing their healthcare related tasks and needs. The creation of a truly patient-centered tool that helps patients gather and bring order to the multitude of data and decisions before them will enable them to become better informed, engaged, and ultimately, activated to achieve better outcomes.
